Vijay Sharma

hello art lovers

Born in Jaipur in 1979, Vijay Sharma obtained his diploma in Applied Arts from the Rajasthan School of art in 2003, where he won the best Annual Exhibit award in 2002 and in 2003.

Speaking about his recent work, the artist notes, “I draw things, peoples, situations and even ideas to which I am emotionally attached. But they do more than that. They give me happiness. It comes in all sorts of ways. Most explicit is desire. Sometimes I dream of things, occasionally I crave something but to own it is not enough, that is if it even can be.

I need to possess it and so I represent it on canvas. It’s my way of fulfilling myself. It produces positive energy in me which cannot be substituted. In short, it is happiness. It is that very happiness which I seek to express. Just like an elixir, my art is a vitamin for the soul and its shaped by my roots: Jaipur.

The city permeates my work. Rajasthani miniatures with their simple themes so boldly expressed are often thought of as the true expression of India’s spirit. They also shape my spirit and its expressed in my art. My figures, like the miniatures, are larger than life. There are so many things in our lives, but only a few stand out, just like in my canvases.”

The artist’s first solo exhibition, aptly titled “My First Show”, was was held in 2008 at the Sukriti Art Gallery, Jawahar Kala Kendra, in Jaipur. He also participated in several group shows at Jawahar Kala Kendra between 2008 and 2009. In 2009, Sharma attended the national camp “Kala Rang Kala Sang” in Gwalior, and was part of “First Impressions”, a group show at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai.

His works has also been featured in exhibitions at Gallery Space and Iconart Art Gallery, Hyderabad, and Enigma Art Gallery, Delhi. Sharma has also exhibited at “One Square Foot” a charitable show at Ahmedabadne Gufa, Ahmedabad, and at Mumbai’s Bandra Fort, at the art event “The Art Conspiracy” organized by The Art Loft Gallery, Mumbai. Sharma lives and works in Delhi.
